If your pup’s anal glands are not expressing properly, this can cause a smelly and uncomfortable situation. With most dog’s, anal glands will express on their own with no problems, however, many of our furry friends do need to have their glands expressed. If left untreated, overfilled and irritated glands can become infected. Some signs that your dog may need to schedule an appointment include scooting along the ground, persistently licking the rear end and a foul odour.

Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

To ensure that your pet receives the most effective treatment possible, we recommend scheduling a visit with a veterinary professional. If anal glands are not expressed properly, they could rupture or not drain properly which will lead to further discomfort and issues.

If my dog scoots on the carpet, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?

Not necessarily. If your dog is scooting frequently, it is best to schedule a visit with your veterinary hospital to determine whether anal glands, intestinal parasites or something else may be the cause for their discomfort.
