Guidance on nutrition to support and maintain your pet's overall health and well-being.
A healthy weight is very important for your pooch’s overall state of health. Maintaining a proper diet and exercise will help your dog to live a long and happy life.
Your veterinarian will start by figuring out your pup’s Body Condition Score. This is determined by a physical and visual exam of your pet’s body, including whether their ribs are visible or easily felt. The score is between 1 and 9, with 1 being the most underweight and 9 being the most overweight score.
Although any dog can become overweight, some breeds are more well known for their weight gain. Your veterinarian can discuss whether this is a concern for your pooch.
Just like with people, there is a higher risk for many health issues, due to carrying excess body weight. Our overweight canines are at a higher risk for joint issues, heart disease, diabetes, anesthetic/surgical risks and reduced liver function. If you are suspicious that your pup is overweight, our team can help you to determine a proper weight loss program and suggest a goal weight for your pet.
