Spaying or neutering can improve your pet’s overall health and happiness as well as increase their lifespan. There are many benefits of spaying and neutering, such as preventing diseases or unwanted behaviours and helping to control the overpopulation of pets.

What does neutering/spaying do to a dog?

Spaying refers to a common surgical procedure for removing the uterus and ovaries of a female. This helps to avoid heat cycles, potential health issues and unwanted litters. For males, neutering is a surgical procedure to remove the testicles. This helps to prevent potential health issues and unwanted behaviours. These procedures are both done under anesthetic and your pet is required to spend the day with us. Your pet is monitored and kept comfortable before, during and after the procedure by our team of veterinarians, technicians and veterinary assistants.

Why is it important to neuter/spay my dog?

There are lots of good reasons to spay or neuter. Spaying helps to prevent uterine infections and mammary cancer, neutering helps to prevent unwanted behaviours in males. You also will be helping to prevent the overpopulation of pets in our area.

How old should a dog be before they are neutered/spayed?

We typically recommend spaying or neutering at around 6 months of age. This recommendation may vary based on the size and/or breed of your pet. Our veterinarians can discuss which age is the best choice for your pet.
